CeBIT 2003

12-19 March CeBIT 2003 Hanover, Germany, gave mobile terminal manufacturers the chance to exhibit their product ranges for 2003. The focus was on products such as the general packet radio service(GPRS) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS).
CeBIT 2003 brought few revolutionary new terminals, exceptions were Nokia 3300 and Siemens Xelibri fashion phones.
Nokia revealed three devices at CeBIT: the 810, 3300 and 6220.

  • Nokia 810 - Bluetooth-enabled GSM in-car phone
  • Nokia 3300 - entry-levelp, phone aimed at the youth market. Its focus is music and games
  • Nokia 6220 - midrange EDGE phone
  • Samsung announced the most new products and the most technologically impressive ones. All the new products it showed have a built-in rotating camera.
Samsung revealed its new smartphone the SGH-D700. It uses version 7.0 of the Symbian operating system and Nokia Mobile Software Series 60 userinterface. It is expected to ship in the 3Q of 2003.
The SGH-P400 clamshell GSM camera phone designed especially for the Vodafone live! consumer product range.
Samsung introduced its first Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone, the SGH-P410 and also unveiled its first 3G phone, the SGH-Z100.

Siemens surprised the industry by announcing its SX1 smartphone at the 3GSM World Congress rather than at CeBIT. CeBIT saw a new midrange product: the SL55
Siemens other major focus at CeBIT was its Xelibri brand. The four Xelibri phones made their first appearance since their launch in January. Xelibri is a new concept for the mobile phone industry, not only in terms of designbut also of marketing and distribution.

A notable feature of this CeBIT was the number of commercial 3G mobile terminals exhibited by emerging players like Samsung, LG, NEC and Sanyo. Leading manufacturers like Nokia, Motorola and Sony Ericsson must be concerned by the emerging players rapid development and the high specifications they offer, even though it was unclear when they would deliver their products. Samsung SGH-Z100, Sanyo SUP-700e, LG U8100 and NEC e606 — reflect Asia/Pacific manufacturers belief that they can gain the upper hand in the 3G market. Their experience of supplying color phones with built-in cameras to Japan and South Korea gives them some advantages over the major GSM phone makers. However, the long delays to 3G networks give the big names a chance to catch up.
